Tweets and more tweets

Here are some of my favorite tweets from the last few weeks.  This is one of the blessings of social media where we can hear the gospel from people all over the world. If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Grace is an inward power that enables us to do what we would not ordinarily want to do. Paul emphasizes inward Grace to show us it’s not about just about what we do; it’s about who we are. If you get the “you” straight, then the doing will come straight too. (Jack Miller) The Father planned your redemption, the Son accomplished it and the Spirit is now applying it. It is finished. @pauldunk Someone will always have better coffee, better music, better facilities, better speaking, better marketing. Showcase Christ and his gospel. Nobody can improve on that. @jaredcwilson I’m not the guru. I’m just a pointer, pointing to the One who, by his very presence, is himself the freedom he gives to his own. @DrSteveWBrown Energy to serve God and love our neighbor

Word for 2018-Abide

Image
My word for 2018 is abide.  I have this great picture over my fireplace made by a good friend that reminds me to abide each day.  My understanding of abide is to "be with Jesus." What does it mean to abide?  Here are some definitions to help us better understand the word.  The Greek word "meno" which is a verb means "to stay". It can also be translated as abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry for. We will also see these in the Old Testament as well. Each week I will share a verse (or two) to help us better understand abiding. 19  Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in the cities that I have given you, (Deuteronomy 3:19) 5  They shall divide it into seven portions. Judah shall continue in his territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall continue in their territory on the north. (Joshua 18:5) 8  Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my dau

Names of God: Savior

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Savior   Savior means one who saves.  It can also be translated deliverer. 11  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke 2:11) 14  And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. (1 John 4:14) What it reminds me?  Ever since sin entered the world in Genesis, people have been looking for a savior or deliverer.  For many, they saw this person as one who would deliver or save them from the oppressive or corrupt leaders of conquering nations.  However, God had a plan from Genesis 3:15 to send One who

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 17  The Lord your God is in your midst,      a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness;      he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Unless you’re assured that God loves you, it’s pretty hard to do anything in the Christian life...the foundation of our assurance of God’s love for us is Christ, and we must continue to root ourselves more deeply in him. (Jack Miller) Nicodemus needed new life—eternal life—but he could not earn it. Eternal life is a gift that comes only from God. #thegospelprojectkids “It is not our goal to be more amazing for Jesus. Names of God: Messiah

Messiah   Messiah is also translated as Christ.  It means anointed one.   41  The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). (John 1:41) 16  Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16) What it reminds me?  Jesus was sent to rescue His people.  He was set aside for a special purpose for us.  It was a name for Jesus to remind us why He came

Sermon Notes from Two Words based on Psalm 78:3-7

Here are my sermon notes from my message today at Hesston MB:   Two Words—2/18/18 1 Timothy 5:1-2 & Psalm 78:3-7 Introduction: 24 hours ago this message was not written. I received a voice mail from Pastor Brad on Friday night at 5 p.m. while I was at the basketball game.   He thought he was getting better but his fever had returned.   I told him, I would take care of the message.   I began to pray. I asked others to pray.   Why?   Because I know my personality.   I am planner.   I prepare weeks before I preach.   I go over a message several times before I preach it on Sunday.   But I was reminded of my own words from last Sunday: ·          Many will walk away from a sermon like this and get busy trying to do the actions by trying harder, doing more. Our actions must be centered on WHO not just the WHAT.   Timothy would do the things written by Paul not because he was good, worked hard, was well educated, well trained, but because an all-powerful, loving, good God ha

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 6 “With what shall I come before the Lord ,      and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,      with calves a year old? 7  Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,      with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,      the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” 8  He has told you, O man, what is good;      and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,      and to walk humbly with your God? You Are Sealed

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Commands to be more joyful as a Christian only push us to focus inward. True, lasting joy comes from outside of us. @WhiteHorseInn Jesus was the perfect sacrifice. He died on the cross to free us from sin and empower us to say no to temptation. #thegospelprojectkids Sanctification is about daily putting off idols, our God – substitutes, and putting on Jesus Christ and his love. (Jack Miller) You might feel burdened and weighed down by all the things you feel you ought to do for God, or by all of your repeated sins, but remember, God is your Savior. When Jesus died on the cross, your day of wrath was over – it is finished. (Jack Miller)   But I don’t have to fix anything or anyone. That is God’s business. When I let him be God, I’m incredibly free to be

Names of God: I AM the Life

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. I am the life   6  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) What it reminds me?  Jesus came to bring us life.  In John 10:10, it says He came to bring eternal or abundant life.  This is not just heaven, but life on earth today.  Jesus did not come to make bad people good, but instead dead people alive.  I am thankful for the life I have in Christ and how that changes how I live today.  For more on this topic, check out Matt Heard's book, Life With A Capital L.

Sermon Notes-A Kid's Song and Timothy based on 1 Timothy 4:11-16

Here are my sermon notes from message today at Hesston MB: A Kid’s Song & Timothy 1 Timothy 4:11-16 Introduction : As I read the passage for the first time, I was reminded of a song that I sang when I was a kid at church.   You may be familiar with this song as well.   It is called “O Be Careful, Little Eyes” (handout). I’m going to sing the 1 st verse and then talk about a few additional lyrics. Just like this song, it seems like Paul is reminding Timothy about some important things related to the church and what Timothy needs to do. Review -Vs. 11 could refer to verses 12-16 or 6-10.   Most commentaries agree that the saying “command and teach these things” refers to what he has previously said but especially on Jesus as Savior. Example (vs. 12, 15) ·          Vs. 12-Why does Paul say “don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young” o    Because Timothy was young-most agree he is in his thirties [1] ·          In the culture, age was a determ
