Favorite Quotes from Books I am Reading

Image
Here are some quotes from books I am currently reading: We daily face the temptation of self-worship. the Holy Spirit's purpose is to point our attention continually to Jesus. Regardless of whether you're conscious of the Spirit's work in your life, he is still working. He doesn't need you to help him. He is who he is and he does what he does. The preaching is the steering wheel of the church. Is it enough simply to get sheep in the pasture while leaving them thereafter unfed? Gospel-driven preaching that proclaims and exults in the revealing of God's glory in Christ. The point is to point them to he living God in the content and through your passion so that that they might respond to God's good news in worship. for the sermon cannot do any good unless there is a savor of Christ in it. The worship gathering ought to seek to orchestrate an encounter with God, not an experience of him. The worship service is primarily about helping people...

Sermon Notes from "The Power of Songs"

Here are my sermon notes from my message today at Hesston MB.  Advent: The Power of Songs Luke 2:19 & Selected Verses Introduction : This advent, we are focusing on head, heart, and hands.   As a church we talk a lot about discipleship in the area of head, heart, and hands.   But what exactly is meant by the heart in Scripture?   How do you understand “heart”? Read Luke 2:19 Thoughts on the heart: ·          21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ( Matthew 6:21) ·          Above all else, guard your heart,   for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23) ·          The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9) ·          5  and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has b...

Sola Scriptura

I loved Jared C. Wilson's chapter "The Pastor and the Bible."  I highlighted a lot!  Often we can let good things become too important in the church and in life.  This chapter is a reminder that our absolute authority is God's Word and how important the Bible is in our preaching.  most gospel-centered preachers have an aversion to "how-to" sermons to begin with...Do these things and thereby reap these rewards is in essence legalistic..."How-to" sermons are specifically designed to help people become better Christians. The long and short of it appears to be that an entire ministerial enterprise dedicated to meeting felt needs, supplying biblical advice, and providing top-notch production values has quietly become a huge success at drawing crowds but a huge failure at what the Bible actually calls the church to do. Our words ought to stand under Scripture, not vice versa. When we come to the biblical text, it is meant to shape us: we are not to...

Sermon-To Tell The Truth-John 18:28-40

Below are my notes from the sermon I preached today at Hesston MB. It was based on John 18:28-40 and was entitled, "To Tell the Truth." Introduction: Do you remember the game show “To Tell the Truth”? Premiered in 1956 & ended in 2001 & the purpose was for celebrities to guess which of the contestants was telling the truth about an occupation or experience. This morning, I am the contestant of “To Tell the Truth”. I have put three statements on a slide. You are to guess which one is the lie. A.       Attended Michael Jackson “Thriller” Tour B.       Valedictorian of My High School Class C.       Have Most Speeding Tickets of all HMBC pastors   We naturally are seekers of truth.   We want to know whether what we are told in the media, by teachers, bosses, families are true. Today, our passage focuses on truth in a conversation between Pilate & Jesus.   Who’s Who? ...
