Who is your favorite author?  There are many great authors out there.  I will be sharing over the next several months authors who have helped me grow in grace and the gospel.  I will try and include images of some of my favorite books by them. These will be shared in alphabetical order. Author: Kyle Idleman

New Book Friday

Christmas has come and gone.  So, every year after Christmas I share new books that I received as gifts.  I love to read and appreciate the gift of books.  So, here is the first installment of New Book Friday for (almost) 2018.

Favorite Book Friday

If you are a regular reader of the blog, you know I have typically posted "New Book Friday". I am out of new books as I wait for new books to arrive for Christmas. I am thankful that my family buys me books for presents.  New Book Friday will return after the New Year.  In the meantime, I will be posting "Favorite Book Friday" until the end of the year.  These are my favorite books I have read over the years.

Coffee, Books and Kids

Yesterday, I was at my Thursday morning office, Lincoln Perk.  For those who don't know, I have chosen to set aside Thursday morning for reading.  I have also made a choice to do this reading at a local coffee shop instead of my office where I could be distracted to do other work.  It also allows me to bump into people from the community and church. I was reading Mark Driscoll's book, Who Do You Think You Are? I will be posting more about this book in posts next week.  But I was also watching some kids whose moms had gathered for coffee.  They were having a great time going from chair to chair.  It was not distracting, but fun to watch.  As I was going back and forth between reading and watching, I read the following quote from the book by Karl Barth.  Barth was asked what was the single most important theological discovery he'd made.  Barth replied, "Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so." A few minutes later, one of th...

Quotes & Coffee

Thought I would share a few quotes from books I read today by Tchvidjian, Harvey, Powell & Clark: Jesus + Nothing = Everything by Tullian Tchvidjian "I was learning the hard way that the gospel alone can free us from our addiction to being liked-that Jesus measured up for us so that we wouldn't have to live under the enslaving pressure of measuring up for others." "I was realizing in a fresh way the now-power of the gospel--that the gospel doesn't simply rescue us from the past and rescue us for the future; it also rescues us in the present from being enslaved to things like fear, insecurity, anger, self-reliance, bitterness, entitlement, and insignificance." When Sinners Say I Do by Dave Harvey (one of the speakers for Art of Marriage) "Let's look briefly at three of the most important components of a solid, biblical theology of marriage . . . The Foundation of Your Marriage-The Bible,  The Fountain of Your Marriage-The Gospel, &  T...

Prayer Ministry

Today, I had the privilege of leading another group of people through prayer team orientation at Hesston MB Church. This is the 3rd time I have led the orientation over the last year. I think I am finally getting the orientation to focus on the most important things. I am so excited about this ministry and how God uses it. It is hard to believe that it has been a year since we started this ministry. Today, I thought I would share some barriers to prayer ministry and some resources that I recommend. What are the barriers to having a prayer team? Getting people to realize prayer team membership is not about being a superior or perfect intercessor, but instead being available for God to use you. Getting the congregation to realize that people can come forward for any type of prayer requests. It does not just have to be a major prayer request. God cares about us and hears our prayers whether big or small. Congregation members being willing to be vulnerable and share when they ha...
