A Sabbatical Message based on Psalm 23 & Matthew 11

Introduction: Sabbatical as defined by The American Heritage Dictionary-“A leave of absence usually granted every 7 th year for travel, research and rest.” Today is my last Sunday at HMBC for the next 3 months as I begin my sabbatical next Sunday.   I want to begin by saying “thank you” to Hesston MB for understanding the importance of sabbatical for its pastors.   This policy has been in effect for many years and not all churches offer this to their pastoral staff so I want to start by saying thanks to you. I greatly appreciate the opportunity.   What will I be doing?   My focus for this sabbatical is going to be prayer so I will be going to a few 24 hour of prayer locations in Dallas and in Kansas City. I will be taking an online class on leading prayer ministry in the church in addition to visiting with some other church leaders about prayer ministry in their churches.   This will also include a time of rest for me which will include some time at a beach (...

God is...

Last year, I wrote a curriculum for our 2nd-4th grade classes at our mid-week program at church called Hide N Seek.  The curriculum focused on who God is. As part of that curriculum, my friend Brittni Rhodes, made images to convey the truth about who God is.  I would like to start sharing these images weekly as a reminder of the good, great, and awesome God we have.

Names of God: Yahweh Rohi

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Yahweh Rohi Yahweh is the Hebrew Name for God. It is "I AM". It is used over 6000 times in the Old Testament.  It was such a holy name that the Jews would not even say it.  Rohi means shepherd. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1) What it reminds me?  God guides, protects, and watches over us.

Playing on the Radio

The "Playing on the Radio" posts in July will be songs that we sang at Jr. Kids Camp at Tabor College.  Enjoy! This song has not been playing on K-Love, but it should be.  I am thankful for my Shepherd!

Gentle Shepherd

Here is another great hymn of the faith.  Be reminded of the Shepherd who guides and directs you.  He is not angry or mad at you, but lovingly guides us.  Enjoy Ernie Haase and Signature Sound as they sing it.

Black Sheep

Below are notes from my sermon today at Hesston MB based on John 10:11-21: Background- In the English language , black sheep is an idiom used to describe an odd or disreputable member of a group, especially within a family . The term stems from the genetic effect in sheep whereby a recessive gene occasionally manifests in the birth of a sheep with black rather than white coloring; these sheep stand out in the flock. The term has typically been given negative implications, implying waywardness (Wikipedia) Have you ever felt like the black sheep? John 10:10-Satan’s Purpose-Steal, Kill, Destroy, God’s Purpose-Abundant Life. I AM-previous sermon- Jesus responds with His identity as fully God, I AM-- I Am Statements in John: Bread of Life, Light, Gate, Shepherd, Resurrection & Life, Way/Truth/Life, Vine   A shepherd’s purpose is to protect, provide, guide. Throughout the Bible, God’s people are compared to sheep). [1] ...

Family Shepherds

I am reading through Family Shepherds by Voddie Baucham.  It is focused on the role of fathers to lead their families spiritually.  Here are a few quotes from the chapters I read on Thursday: "The problem is that this family is in the same house, but never share the same space. They share an address and a last name, but they don't share life." Tim Keller is quoted in relation to the gospel by saying, "We never "get beyond the gospel" in our Christian life to something more "advanced." The gospel is not the first "step" in a "stairway" of truths, rather, it is more like a "hub" in a "wheel" of truth. The gospel is not just the A-B-C's but the A to Z of Christianity. The gospel is not just the minimum required doctrine necessary to enter the kingdom, but the way we make all progress in the kingdom." "If Christ's life is the central message, then I have to tell the news.  If my life is t...
