Word for 2019: Holy Spirit

For the past several years, I have chosen a word for the year.  Some of those words have been: God's power, gospel, in Christ, and abide.  As I thought about 2019, the word that I am going to focus on will be Holy Spirit.  So, this is more than just a word, it is a person.  I look forward to growing in my understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and what He does from Genesis to Revelation.  Each week I will share a few verses that are connected to the person of the Holy Spirit. 26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. (John 14:26) 26  “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. (John 15:26)

Names of God: I AM the Life

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. I am the life 6  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) What it reminds me?  Jesus came to bring us life.  In John 10:10, it says He came to bring eternal or abundant life.  This is not just heaven, but life on earth today.  Jesus did not come to make bad people good, but instead dead people alive.  I am thankful for the life I have in Christ and how that changes how I live today.  For more on this topic, check out Matt Heard's book, Life With A Capital L.

Helper   Jesus tells his disciples that He will ask the Father to send a "paraclete" which can be translated as a helper, counselor, comforter, or advocate.  Here is one of the definitions from Blue Letter Bible:   one who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate   16  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, (John 14:16) What it reminds me?  This name for the Holy Spirit reminds us that He is our helper or counselor or advocate.  When we a...

Greater Sermon

Introduction:   Note from Francis Chan at back of Big Red Tractor Book Quotes from Greater by Steven Furtick   “That’s the beauty of the greater way. It’s all about what Jesus has already done and what He desires to do through us. Period.   Nobody does greater things for God because they’ve got it all together. And nobody is disqualified because they don’t.   Including you and me. God doesn’t do greater things exclusively through great people. He does them through anyone who is willing to trust Him in greater ways.” Greater than John the Baptist-Luke 7:27-28 ·          Jesus speaking about John the Baptist says o    Quote Malachi 3:1-OT prophecy about John the Baptist ·          No one greater than John yet least in the kingdom of God is greater than he o    No One-speaking of OT prophets §   because he saw what they prophesied, he proclai...

Ready To Preach

This Sunday, I am preaching on the topic of  "Greater" based on three passages in Scripture.  They are: 28  I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (Luke 7:28) 12  Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12) 4  You, dear children are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4) I look forward to talking about the greater life God has planned for us.  If you are in the Hesston area, join us at Hesston MB (610 W. Randall) at 10:10 a.m.  Or come early at 9 a.m. and enjoy pancakes served by our youth as a fundraiser for their mission trip to Chicago.
