I finished Family Shepherds today

Image
Today, I finished reading Family Shepherds by Voddie Baucham.  Baucham does a great job sharing from Scripture what God's Word says to fathers.  He unapologetically calls men to lead their homes spiritually.  Several chapters were of great value to me.  They were: A Three-Pronged Approach to Biblical Discipleship Heralding the Gospel at Home Male Headship in the Home Corrective Discipline  Here are a few quotes from the last few chapters of the book: "Thus the family shepherd must view the Bible as more authoritative than the cultural trend." "Church membership is the most important aspect of lifestyle evaluation." "A healthy church will expose us to the regular teaching, preaching, reading, and singing of the Word of God that will shape the way we think about all other aspects of life." "Mature men and women in the church will gently call us out when we go off the deep end." "Rare indeed is the man who looks honest...

Family Shepherds by Baucham

I am reading through Baucham's Family Shepherds .  As with any book, there are things I agree & disagree with.  Here are a few quotes related to parenting: "Hence, doing good is something that one can accomplish apart from Christ through proper conditioning.  This is a direct contradiction of Jesus' teaching. . ." "The result is a child-training approach that relies on behavior modification as opposed to spiritual transformation." "As Tedd Tripp writes, "Addressing the child's character places the emphasis on issues of the heart. It enables you to get underneath the behavior and address the thoughts, motives, and purposes of the heart." "This is the heart of formative discipline. We must bring our children back to the cross again and again. We must teach them why they sin, what the consequences are, and how Christ is their only hope. " "If you can't find a precept in the Bible, ask yourself why you've ...

What I Am Reading

It's August 1st!  I have not been reading as much as I would like, but picked up two new books at the USMB Convention in Omaha. Here is a list of books I am currently reading: The Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler Prayer Coach by James Nicodem Family Shepherds by Voddie Baucham The Genius of Generosity by Chip Ingram

Family Shepherds

I am reading through Family Shepherds by Voddie Baucham.  It is focused on the role of fathers to lead their families spiritually.  Here are a few quotes from the chapters I read on Thursday: "The problem is that this family is in the same house, but never share the same space. They share an address and a last name, but they don't share life." Tim Keller is quoted in relation to the gospel by saying, "We never "get beyond the gospel" in our Christian life to something more "advanced." The gospel is not the first "step" in a "stairway" of truths, rather, it is more like a "hub" in a "wheel" of truth. The gospel is not just the A-B-C's but the A to Z of Christianity. The gospel is not just the minimum required doctrine necessary to enter the kingdom, but the way we make all progress in the kingdom." "If Christ's life is the central message, then I have to tell the news.  If my life is t...

Voddie Baucham at D6 2011

Voddie Baucham is up and talking about the culture war. Baucham said the culture war began in Genesis 3. The central issue is the Word of God vs. Word of Man. What happened to marriage? Genesis 2:18-It is not good for the man to be alone. Some have been gifted supernaturally to be single. Notice what is next-Adam is told to name the animals. His response when someone asks "Is the Bible literal?" His response, "where I am supposed to". Adam did not name every genus and species The world would only have contained a representative sampling of the animals we know currently (i.e. the cat or the dog) Adam named categories of animals. Theological Issues Adam has no concept of alone Adam has no concept of need Thus, God demonstrates here that marriage is his idea; not man's. Single people-If God can find Adam a wife, when he was the only human being, he can find you someone too. God Gives Marriage Its Purpose Procreation-Be fruitful & multiply, involves bearin...

A D6 Legacy

This past Sunday, my message was titled, "A D6 Legacy." I thought I would leave an outline of my message for you. The message was based on Deuteronomy 6:1-9. A video that I was going to introduce my message was the promo video for the D6 Conference. Check it out at www.d6conference.com. Background The Israelites have been wandering for 40 years at this point. As they prepare to cross into the promised land, Moses gives them speech similar to what we would hear at a high school graduation. Preparing them to go into a "new land." We pass on the most important things at times like these. Think of these two points as you read the text. We need to look to GOD for help in leaving a D6 legacy. A D6 legacy is: Generational (vs. 1-3) Importance of passing on "commands, decrees, and laws". This was not Moses' agenda, soapbox, or choice but instead what "the Lord your God directed me." It was important that their faith be passed on to other gen...

Family Worship

I am excited about this weekend as we are having Parent/Child Dedication at our church and Molly is going to be dedicated. It will also be my first opportunity as Associate Pastor to be involved in this special event. I am enjoying meeting with families to talk about the significance of their role in the faith development of their children. Let me share a little about what I am learning about family worship. I had heard about this concept before, but only used in a negative sense and most often associated with the word, "boring." I also realized that as a father I am to be actively involved in the spiritual training and instruction of my children. I cannot delegate this important responsibility to the church alone. But I have also come to understand that the "how to's " are lacking. It seems the church has challenged the family in this area, but resources are not readily available. However, I discovered several resources that are helpful. First, I send a...

Live The Word At Home

As Associate Pastor of Family Ministry, one of my joys is meeting with couples/parents to get to know them better and for them to get to know me. I enjoy hearing their stories of how they met and to find out more about their lives. Currently, I am visiting families to talk about parent/child dedication. This serves as a reminder to me of the importance of the partnership between parents and the church. What a blessing it is to know you are not alone in parenting, yet at the same time to stand before your church family and commit to raising your children to love God and love others. I look forward to Molly's dedication as well as six other families at Hesston MB on June 21. I finished chapters 6-7 of Voddie Baucham's book, "Family Driven Faith" this afternoon. This book is definitely a challenge to the way we do children and youth ministry. The basis for his book is Deuteronomy 6. He does a great job of integrating the Bible into everything he says. Let me...
