Sermon Notes "I Need A Sign" based on 1 Corinthians 14:20-25

Introduction: Have you heard someone say, “God, give me a sign.”  What exactly is a sign?  I immediately thought about hand signs of a few college teams (WSU, K-State, Texas).  Here’s my thoughts as we prepare to hear the passage today.  These signs are not WSU, K-State or Texas but they point to those universities.  In the same way, prophecy and tongues are pointing or directing to something else as well. Review ·          Pursue love, gifts, and prophecy; purpose of tongues and prophecy (to build up) (1-5) ·          Use of examples and application for tongues/prophecy (band, battle, languages) (6-12) ·          Building Up The Church (spirit, soul, body; edification, God’s at Work In You) (13-19) Maturity (vs. 20-21) ·          Vs. 20-Do not be children (young child) in your thinking (proce...

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 3  Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14  When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15  Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16  But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17  They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18  And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19  Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two...

Greater by J.D. Greear

I am continuing to read Jesus Continued by J.D. Greear.  He will be one of the speakers at Liberate 2015.  I thoroughly enjoyed his message last year and look forward to what Holy Spirit puts on his heart this year.  Here are some quotes on the topic of "greater" from Jesus Continued : In other words, it's not that Jesus worked while he was here and now the church works in his absence. Jesus worked then through his incarnation, and he works now through his church. But Luke writes it (Luke 5:17) in this way to show us that even Jesus' power to heal came from the Holy Spirit. Why make that distinction? If Jesus had healed exclusively out of his own power, then he'd have a significant advantage over his disciples. But if the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus, then the disciples could do what he did, continuing the ministry he started. Believers, who now possess that same Holy Spirit, have access to that same power. Nothing in Acts nor in the rest of the New Testam...

Charles Spurgeon on mighty acts and wonders

Below is a quote by Charles Spurgeon that was in Jesus Continued by J.D. Greear: We do our Lord an injustice when we suppose that he wrought all his mighty acts, and showed himself strong for those in the early time, but doth not perform wonders or lay bare his arm for the saints who are now upon the earth. Do you believe God still does might acts today?  Why or why not?

Will of God, Resources and Prayer

I continue two previous posts based on The Circle Maker  today.  These thoughts are based on our limiting of God and how God provides for His glory. You have to trust the favor of God to do for you what you cannot do for yourself. And if we pray in alignment with the will of God, He always provides. God loves showing up in unexpected ways at unexpected times. The blessings of God will complicate your life in positive ways. God is great not just because nothing is too big for Him; God is great because nothing is too small for Him. The reason many of us miss the miracles is that we aren't looking and listening.

New Book: When Heaven Invades Earth

Last week, I started a new book given to me by a friend at church.  It is called When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson.  I am only a few chapters in, but thought I would share some insights: "The lack of miracles isn't because it is not in God's will for us.  The problem exists between our ears." "Jesus destroyed the power of sin, sickness, and poverty through His redemptive work on the cross." "The mistaken idea is this: if it is good, it can't be for now." "We are often more convinced of our unworthiness than we are of His worth. Our inability takes on greater focus than does His ability. But the same One who called fearful Gideon a Valiant Warrior and unstable Peter a Rock has called us the Body of His beloved Son on earth."
