Sermon Notes-"Transitional Thoughts"

Introduction: As I was thinking and praying about what to share during my final sermon on staff, I began to think of the transition that I am making as well as the church.   We as pastors have been consistently focused on three priorities over the last several years: prayer, worship and equip.   So, even though I may no longer be on staff in a few weeks at this church, as a member of this church I believe just as strongly that Hesston MB needs to continue to be about these priorities in the days ahead.   However, the more I prayed about it, the more I realized that to get to these priorities, we as a church also had to make some transitions so that is why I am entitling this message “Transitional Thoughts”.   Transition is defined as “the process or an instance of changing from one form, state, activity, or place to another.” Educate to Equip- Ephesians 4:11-16 ·          What is the difference?   o    To e...

Sermon Notes-"Reaction to Response" based on Acts 3:11-26

Reaction ·          Vs. 11-12-People Amazed & Peter speaks o    The Lame beggar being healed prompted a reaction from the people and it leads them to want to know more.   This is a typical response to signs and wonders in the Bible and in the present. o    Peter asks them WHY do you wonder and WHY stare at us §   What God did in the past, He is still doing in the present and will continue to do in the future.   Healing did not stop in the book of Acts. §   It was not the power or piety of Peter that did the miracle.   The power is from the Spirit and based on who God is not who we are. ·          an undue focus on the human agents of divine healing could detract from the glory of God [1] ·          Such a mighty work was not a demonstration of the ‘ power ’ of the apostles. Neither can it be imagined...

Sermon Notes "I Need A Sign" based on 1 Corinthians 14:20-25

Introduction: Have you heard someone say, “God, give me a sign.”  What exactly is a sign?  I immediately thought about hand signs of a few college teams (WSU, K-State, Texas).  Here’s my thoughts as we prepare to hear the passage today.  These signs are not WSU, K-State or Texas but they point to those universities.  In the same way, prophecy and tongues are pointing or directing to something else as well. Review ·          Pursue love, gifts, and prophecy; purpose of tongues and prophecy (to build up) (1-5) ·          Use of examples and application for tongues/prophecy (band, battle, languages) (6-12) ·          Building Up The Church (spirit, soul, body; edification, God’s at Work In You) (13-19) Maturity (vs. 20-21) ·          Vs. 20-Do not be children (young child) in your thinking (proce...
