You Are Not Condemned

“ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 8:1)

Christ defeated sin

Because Christ defeated sin She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sin s.” (Matthew 1:21)   18  Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousnessleads to justification and life for all men. 19  For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 20  Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21  so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:18-20)  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sin s in accordance with the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:3)  now I a...

Satan and the Holy Spirit

In Crash the Chatterbox, Steven Furtick discusses in Section 3 the differences between condemnation and conviction.  Here are a few quotes to help you know whether the voice you hear is Satan or the Holy Spirit: Satan's main job isn't temptation. It's accusation...When the two work in tandem, the one-two punch they deliver can paralyze even the strongest saints. In other words, I needed to acknowledge the substance of my sin. But then I needed to allow the Holy Spirit to take my guilt to a redemptive place. The Enemy may have a word. But he doesn't have the last word. Would have. Could have. Should have. This is the language of condemnation underscored by the passivity of regret. A believer who is equally convinced of these two realities--sin is serious, but Christ is enough--is the Enemy's worst nightmare. Condemnation's greatest talent is imitation. Conviction is the work of the Holy Spirit. Condemnation is the Enemy's best impersonation of th...

Lent Reading

Image
I usually don't give up anything or add something during Lent.  However, I have the last two years chosen a book that will help me reflect on Jesus' death on the cross.  This year, I am reading Scandalous by D. A. Carson.  Here are some quotes from my reading last week: No, the hardest truth to get across to this generation is what the Bible says about sin. All people without distinction are both condemned and savable. . . The cross is not only the demonstration of God's love; it is the demonstration of God's justice.  Go to the cross. It is where wrath and mercy meet. Holiness and peace kiss each other. The climax of redemptive history is the cross.

Accuser or Advocate?

This past Sunday, our lesson topic was "Accuser or Advocate" from a group study by Judah Smith called Jesus Is ________.  I found our discussion after the video to be challenging and encouraging at the same time.  So, let me pose the question Smith poses to us, "Are we to be accusers or advocates in our world?"  I know what the obvious answer is.  We should be advocates.  But how does this apply practically with our spouse, children, friends, neighbors? Can we be advocates all the time?  As the old adage says, "hate the sin, love the sinner."  Can we stand firm on convictions from God's Word in a non-accusatory way?  Or should we?  Like I told the class, it requires a lot of prayer and leading by the Holy Spirit.  Here are some verses that show examples of accusation? 10  And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the ...

Condemnation or Conviction?

What is the difference between these two words?  Does it matter?  I have had several conversations over the last few months about how important it is to distinguish between these two words. Here is a brief explanation of the two words based on my opinion: Condemnation is from Satan. Conviction is from the Holy Spirit. 8  Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,  (Romans 8:1) 13  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.   (John 16:13) 4  For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5  because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.  (1 Thessalonians 1:4-5) How to distinguish the two? Does it pr...

Condemnation, Sin, and Gospel

We are wrapping up a six week Bible study on Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler.  It has been a rich study and I would highly recommend it.  Here are a few thoughts to think about today: Sealed in my heart that day was the truth that unless the gospel is made explicit, unless we clearly articulate that our righteousness is imputed to us by Jesus Christ, that on the cross he absorbed the wrath of God aimed at us and washed us clean--even if we preach biblical words on obeying God--people will believe that Jesus' message is that he has come to condemn the world, not to save it. We must abandon the idea that there is condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! We must abandon the idea that our sins pile up on some scale that will earn God's punishment when tipped, as if Christ didn't take this wrath from us already on the cross.  We must also abandon the idea that our good behavior somehow rubs the spiritual lamp that inclines God, like a genie, to ...
