This post originally appeared at http://www.1corinthians13parenting.com/blog/ on 8/7/14 It is hard to believe that school will be starting for my kids in about two weeks. This is a time of anticipation and excitement for kids and teens alike. This provides a great opportunity for parents to get involved. Dads, in what ways can you volunteer at your child’s school? I have thoroughly enjoyed opportunities at my kids’ schools. Several reasons to consider volunteering: your kids love seeing you there, getting to know the teachers/staff better, knowing classmates and friends of your son/daughter, help is needed with students because of budget cutbacks, and the joy you receive when serving.   Ways that you can serve at your local schools: Mentoring For the past 5 years, I have emailed the teachers in the grade my child is in and asked if they need any help with reading or math.  They have not turned me down. Emerging Themes from #d62012

I promised I would share some emerging themes from D6 Conference 2012.  There were a few thoughts that were repeated often or connected in my mind.  As I continue to reflect on what God wants from me moving forward, I feel strongly these themes will be central. ABIDE-Yes I know it was the theme of the conference and everything, but it was an important theme for anyone in ministry whether volunteer or paid.  Pete Wilson started us here and it continued to come up often.  Thanks Randall House for choosing this theme and for the great job key note speakers did keeping it central.  It's not what I do, but who I am.  Am I connected to the vine?  Staying connected to God is essential for my calling. I will continue to meditate on John 15 for the weeks ahead. EQUIP PARENTS-This is a major part of my job description at church.  Every conference I attend I am looking for ways to do this better.  The need for equipping was brought up during worksho...

Mark Matlock at #d62012

Mark Matlock is wrapping up our afternoon at D6.  You can visit his website here . His topic was "The Hero's Journey"  Every story starts with the ordinary life. Next, comes a call to action . After the call to action, usually failure comes. The mentor follows our failures.  What do they give?  Wisdom . A mentor helps the young hero connect to the Vine. As you look at the life of our heroes (i.e. Star Wars, Spiderman, Batman), why are the parents most often absent? Who else from the Body of Christ will be a mentor to your kids? Trials occur  Maturity Mark used popular culture to illustrate the hero's journey.  This is a great option to keep us listening after a day packed full of ideas. Thankful for his creativity!
