Names of God: I am the life

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. This is a new feature on the blog on the names of God.  Why?  Because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. I am the life   6  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) What it reminds me?  Jesus came to bring us life.  In John 10:10, it says He came to bring eternal or abundant life.  This is not just heaven, but life on earth today.  Jesus did not come to make bad people good, but instead dead people alive.  I am thankful for the life I have in Christ and how that changes how I live today.  For more on this topic, check out Matt Heard's...

Heaven and Earth

After my kids left for school, I was reading my current devotion The Power of 21 Days  by Jared Stump.  He had two sentences that left me saying AMEN.  I had to share them with you. A theology about people going to Heaven when they die isn't very controversial, because it allows the kingdoms of this world to remain in control here on earth. But a Kingdom that comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world conflicts with the kingdoms of this world that seek to find life by imparting death into others. What are your thoughts?  Do you agree or disagree? It sounds very familiar to the message of the gospel that a Savior takes what is dead and makes it alive.  John 10:10 continues to be on my favorite verses, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Speak life today in your home, workplace, community and our world!

Black Sheep

Below are notes from my sermon today at Hesston MB based on John 10:11-21: Background- In the English language , black sheep is an idiom used to describe an odd or disreputable member of a group, especially within a family . The term stems from the genetic effect in sheep whereby a recessive gene occasionally manifests in the birth of a sheep with black rather than white coloring; these sheep stand out in the flock. The term has typically been given negative implications, implying waywardness (Wikipedia) Have you ever felt like the black sheep? John 10:10-Satan’s Purpose-Steal, Kill, Destroy, God’s Purpose-Abundant Life. I AM-previous sermon- Jesus responds with His identity as fully God, I AM-- I Am Statements in John: Bread of Life, Light, Gate, Shepherd, Resurrection & Life, Way/Truth/Life, Vine   A shepherd’s purpose is to protect, provide, guide. Throughout the Bible, God’s people are compared to sheep). [1] ...
