Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 6  “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2  “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4  so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Prayer 5  “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell yo...

What do we do?

Below are my notes from my sermon today at Hesston MB.  The passage was John 6:16-36. Opening- THINGS A MOM DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR 1. I swallowed a goldfish. 2. Your lipstick works better than crayons. 3. Does grape juice leave a stain? 4. Look, I painted the front door! 5. The principal called... 6. But DAD says that word all the time. 7. What's it cost to fix a window? 8. The dog doesn't like dressing up in your clothes. 9. Has anyone seen my earthworms??? 10. I'm going to run away!! (Well, maybe SOME days...) Background- Our passage follows the feeding of the 5000 where not only did Jesus do a miracle to feed the people, but He did so abundantly where 12 basketfuls were left over. Jesus walking on water is written about in Matthew 14 & Mark 6   (Vs. 16-21) Jesus is powerful Vs. 19-they saw Jesus approaching. . . Their response: terrified. Why? Amazed at this miracle, thought he was a ghost, stressed out by the wind & waves. Ou...

Which Way Should I Go?

As a guy, I hate asking for directions when I might be lost.  I like to use the GPS on my phone, but this can often lead me to go weird ways when I know exactly how to get somewhere.  To prove the point, I have driven to Sterling often (since I graduated from there), but have ended up taking the longer route the last two times I have driven there.  This driving illustration leads me to direction we need in our lives.  I have several decisions related to ministry and home that need to be made.  At times, I can become overwhelmed with deciding between two good options.  As I was praying on Tuesday, I was pondering these decisions and asked God to speak to me through His Word.  He did.  Here is the Scripture that was brought to mind: 1  Do not fret because of those who are evil      or be envious of those who do wrong; 2  for like the grass they will soon wither,      like green plants they wil...

Promptings

I am continuing to read James Nicodem's book Prayer Coach .  Chapter 4 is entitled, "Promptings."  I look forward to discussing this book with our D6 Dads' groups.  Here are a few quotes that struck me: "Whenever we find ourselves worrying about something a little alarm should go off in our minds. Time to pray! Time to pray! Time to pray!" "How often do I come up with plans when God wants me to come up with prayers?" "This Scripture (Philippians 4:6-7) plainly teaches that if something is big enough to worry about, it's big enough to pray about." "You can do all sorts of things after you've prayed. But you can do nothing of significance until you've prayed." "Temptation should prompt us to pray!" "Lord, I'm feeling the tug of sin. Would you please satisfy the desire that sin is promising to fulfill?" "We must cultivate the habit of immediately interceding for those who hav...

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Are you stressed about finances or work? Are relationships with family or friends strained? Do you need a job? Are you sick? Are you worried about your kids' and their choices or decisions? Do you have a house in Iola that needs to be sold? Oh-that's just me. If you are facing any of these questions or assorted others, let this hymn be an encouragement today. I know these words were a good reminder for me this morning. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions , they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be. Refrain Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain Pardon for ...
