Word for 2018-abide

Image
My word for 2018 is abide.  I have this great picture over my fireplace made by a good friend that reminds me to abide each day.  My understanding of abide is to "be with Jesus." What does it mean to abide?  Here are some definitions to help us better understand the word.  The Greek word "meno" which is a verb means "to stay". It can also be translated as abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry for.  Each week I will share a verse (or two) to help us better understand abiding. 24 So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God. (1 Corinthians 7:24)   40  Yet in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 7:40) 6  and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you may help me on my journey, wherever I...

What is the gospel?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have chosen the word, gospel, to think about and meditate on in 2016.  Gospel in the Greek literally means, "good news."  My best definition of gospel is the "life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ." I hope to have a deeper understanding of the word and definition at the end of 2016. Check out previous posts on this topic. 17  For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power (1 Corinthians 1:17)   15  For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. (1 Corinthians 4:15)

Promises of God from 1 Corinthians

Here are more promises of God from 1 Corinthians compiled by Kenneth Boa: We have been sanctified in Christ Jesus and have been called to be holy (1:2). The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1:18). The things that God has prepared for those who love him are beyond human comprehension and imagination (2:9). As God’s children, all things—whether the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are ours, and we are of Christ, and Christ is of God (3:22-23). Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in us, whom we have received from God, and we are not our own; we were bought at a price (6:19-20). As in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive; because we will be resurrected, we know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (15:22, 58).
