Sermon-"Power Struggle"

Introduction: Where do we see “power” in our culture? (money, politics, status (get to the top no matter what), Control) How does that compare to power in the kingdom of God? (humility, dependance, less of me, abiding) Do we believe that power is available to us? If we do, would it change how we live? Power-Greek work “dunamis” where we get dynamite ·          19  and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might  20  that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, (Ephesians 1:19-20) ·          16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,… 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power...

Sermon Notes: Word and Spirit based on Luke 24:13-32

Introduction : Today’s message is titled, “Word AND Spirit”. The key word for us this morning is the word AND. For many, including myself and many churches, we see these words on a continuum and we move back and forth between the two. So, what does an individual and/or church look like that holds Word and Spirit up equally together?  Let me tell you my story. I have attended church all of my life and learned a lot of stories from the Bible. Then at summer camp in Middle School, I realized I was a sinner who needed a Savior and his name was Jesus and I began my Christian journey then.   But it wasn’t until college that I began to really see Jesus as an essential part of my life.   That realization came about because there was a girl that I really liked and I wanted to impress but knew that she was looking for someone who was more serious about their faith.   The Holy Spirit used this girl to create in me a hunger for more of Him. I began to study the Bible and g...

Names of God: Logos

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Logos Logos means word. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) What it reminds me?  Jesus was present at creation.  Jesus is God.  Jesus has unity with the Father and Holy Spirit.  The Bible teaches us about who God is.  We need to be careful to not let our belief in the Bible replace the Trinity.  As J.D. Greear has said, many "believe (functionally speaking) in "Father, Son, and Holy Bible." We do not worship the Bible, but instead God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy...

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 6  Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7  Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8  This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” ...
