o   Bonus Images

§  Wind-John 3:8- The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”we can’t see Him, but we can see His working

§  Fire-Acts 2:2-3- Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

§  Water-John 7:37-39- On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Thoughts vs. 10-12

·         Vs. 10-God revealed it by His Spirit

o   This wisdom (not learned by this age or rulers of this age) but a wisdom about God and his plan and purposes. This Jesus Christ and Him crucified is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.  This wisdom is not about Paul’s education or in his message delivery but in the power of the Spirit. Why?  So your faith is not in humans but in God.

o   The same Holy Spirit that guided the authors of Scripture to write also guides or helps us understand Scripture.

·         Vs. 10-The Spirit searches the deep things of God

o   Depth-knowledge that is profound

o   Romans 11:33-34-Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” We will return to this thought at the end of the message.

o   The Spirit has free and full access to this knowledge, and thereby is able to reveal it…This wisdom is not attainable by human beings without the aid of God’s Spirit[1]

o   Thiselton describes it as the Spirit’s revealing God’s inmost heart[2]

·         Vs. 11-Our thoughts vs. God’s thoughts

o   To help us understand this depth of knowledge, Paul uses a human example.  Look at the person beside you.  What are they thinking?  We can guess but we would probably be wrong.  How can we understand someone’s thoughts?  They have to reveal them to us.  The same is true of the Holy Spirit revealing to us God’s thoughts.

·         Vs. 12-We have not received spirit of the world but Holy Spirit

o   spirit of human wisdom that opposes God[3]

o   Why? So we may understand what God has freely given us

§  If we were to ask for a list of the benefits to which Paul is pointing-1:30 is a good summary: “Christ Jesus,” our “wisdom from God,” namely, “righteousness, sanctification and redemption.”[4]

§  I would add salvation, mercy, grace, love, presence, power, Word, Prayer, Church.

Truths vs. 13-15

·         Vs. 13-We speak not in words taught by human wisdom but taught by Spirit

o   This is how I would explain how God is directing me to share Scriptures with people at YMCA, Lincoln Perk, Hesston MB and more.

o   pastoral timing (not only what to say but also when & how to say it).[5]

·         Vs. 13-Expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words

o   The idea of taking deep things of God and explaining them to others.

o   spiritual person n. — a person characterized by the presence of the Holy Spirit; especially of a mature, Christian life and its relation to the Spirit. Moved by Holy Spirit

·         Vs. 14-man without Spirit does not accept the things from Spirit of God

o   Man without the Spirit is better translated as natural man-Greek means of the soul, from the heart (psychikos-(see-kee-kos)) Soul-mind, will, emotions. Could be the “soulish Christian”

o   Why? Foolishness & cannot understand

o   Spiritually discerned

§  The “spiritual person” is in a position to inquire into all things and find prophetic insight from God in connection with the wisdom of the cross.[6]

But…vs. 16

·         Isaiah 40:13 “Who can fathom the mind of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor?

o   What is the answer?  No one.

·         We have the mind of Christ

o   Goes against the people of Corinth’s attitude of knowledge and philosophy.

o   of pivotal importance-mind of Lord to mind of Christ

o   To “have the mind of Christ” means to look at life from the Saviour’s point of view, having His values and desires in mind. It means to think God’s thoughts and not think as the world thinks.[7]

Closing: “One Awkward Moment” by Casting Crowns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_IBVPFvNVQ

  • o   Convergence Awkward Moment (focus on couple, conversation at supper, Brad was feeling mercy and compassion for them, sharing Scripture, Brad sharing)
  • o   I am going to give you some time to reflect on the message as we listen to a song from Casting Crowns that Bethany shared with me.
  • o   Your One Awkward Moment could be coming forward to receive Jesus for the first time, could be coming forward for prayer for the first time, could be sharing an encouraging word or Scripture, could be showing compassion or mercy or appropriate touch with someone, could be offering to pray with someone in your neighborhood or at the store or at work.
  • o   The purpose is not to cause you feel guilt or shame for not sharing, but instead to ask God to empower and equip you to share at times even when it may be awkward based on who you are and how you are gifted.
