I think when it comes to Christianity we need to stop telling people what they should do and start telling them what's been done. @evanheadrick  How can we glorify God? Bear fruit. See John 15. But in the church we have focused on the fruit without remembering the Vine. It’s not about what we do, but what God in Christ through the Holy Spirit does through us. Church, abide (be with Jesus) & the fruit will come! #hesstonmb That is what God‘s goodness has done to me. He has created in my heart a great desire to please the one who loves me, knowing that, if I don’t please him or even have the desire to please him, he will remain quite fond of me. @DrSteveWBrown A salvation from sin divorced from justification is an impossibility and justification of sinne…

What does it mean to be "in Christ"?

For 2017, the phrase I am focusing on is "in Christ."  Each week, I will post verse(s) that includes the phrase "in Christ". I look forward to growing in understanding of what it means to be "in Christ."
13 And we also thank God constantlyfor this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of menbut as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. Names of God: Yahweh Magen and Ezer

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches.
The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is.

Yahweh Magen and Ezer

Yahweh is the Hebrew Name for God. It is "I AM". It is used over 6000 times in the Old Testament.  It was such a holy name that the Jews would not even say it.

Magen means shield. Ezer means help.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield. (Psalm 33:20)

What it reminds me?  God protects us.  God helps us. No matter what life throws at us, we can know God protects us.  He also helps us in the middle of our difficulties and struggles. We are never without God's help. When we get to heaven, I think we will all be amazed at how God protected and helped us throughou…

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word.

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, an…

Because the Gospel is endlessly rich, it is the only thing that can handle the burden of being the "MAIN thing" of a church. @timkellernyc You can’t fix the culture with law, you can’t fix the church with law. Change happens by the gospel through the Holy Spirit. @theocast_org The Christ inside of you is greater than the circumstances surrounding you. Fall deep into His arms and enjoy the love that won't let go! @JeremyG220 A well-gospeled discipleship culture in a church means no shame for recovering prodigals *or* recovering older brothers. @jaredcwilson When you preach, do not be stingy with the Gospel. You Are Loved

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved usand sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:9-10)

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church,25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known,26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Names of God: Yahweh Sabaoth

Sabaoth means host and is often explained as heaven's armies.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah (Psalm 24:10)

What it reminds me?  We are never alone.  God has angels watching over us.  These angels offer protection and do battle on our behalf.  It also an encouragement when I am afraid or weak that it is not my strength that is important, but instead God and his angels who can be strong …

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word.

4 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 6 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.”7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8 Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the Lord.” 9 Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. (Jeremiah 1:4-9)

Quotes from Gospel Fluency

Image
Have we separated our theology from practical day to day living? Do we really believe the gospel is the answer to every problem we face?  The answer to these questions is addressed in Gospel Fluency by Jeff Vanderstelt.  Additional resources are available through his website SaturateTheWorld.com

Below you will quotes from the end of the book:

Growth in gospel fluency required regularly being with others who know and love Jesus, speak about him often, and commit together to regularly remind one another of the gospel when they forget.

the whole Bible is the gospel--the good news that God has come to rescue and restore humanity and all creation in and through the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Jesus won't be the hero of the story if we don't really need a Savior for our sin.

My regular counsel to Christians these days is to spend more time listening than talking if they want to be able to share the gospel of Jesus in a way that meaningfully speaks to the hearts of others.

The Christian faith cannot be anchored on the finite work of the redeemed; rather, it must be anchored on the infinite work of the Redeemer. @JustinHWillms Because the gospel is endlessly rich, it can handle the burden of being the one “main thing” of a church. @DailyKeller The word of God, properly understood, never just defines who God is. It redefines who you are as His children. @PaulTripp Fruit to Root: Who is God? What has God done? Who am I in light of God's work? How should I live in light of who I am?  @JeffVanderstelt "It is finished" means I stand at judgment without fear because I stand there in Christ's righteousness not my own.  @Byronyawn God’s grace is just as powerfully demonstrated in our sanctification as our justification.…

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. The Lord is the strongholdof my life;
of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

What it reminds me?  Even when life is dark and it seems like evil is all around, God is light.  It encourages me to know that despite circumstances around me, I can trust in the Light to guide me in this journey.

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word.
Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.4 Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the…

Antinomians don’t need more law, but gospel. Legalists don’t need less law, but gospel. The gospel answers every wrong use of God’s law. @joshwaulk As believers, we should be working towards what unites us, not what divides us. (Terry Hunt) @usmbchurches  In Isaiah 61, we see Trinity followed by 7 verbs showing the work of God. Every aspect of this work is focused on US. @birdchadlouis How do you kill an awakening? Add some requirements. Add some kickers (what we should do) @DrSteveWBrown Whenever I hear the law, I get excited because the gospel is coming. But many times in church all we hear is all law. @danemeryprice Preaching 45 minutes of law and then throwing the gospel in at the end is not gospel-centered, it's gospel-caboose. @jaredcwilson Ever…

Quotes from Gospel Centered Kids Ministry

Image
A few weeks ago I finished reading Gospel Centered Kids Ministry by Brian Dembowczyk. He works for Lifeway and leads the team that produces Gospel Project for Kids Curriculum. Here are some quotes from the final chapters of the book:

We see that Jesus met the spiritual needs (teaching and preaching), the physical needs (healing), and emotional needs (compassion) of the people.  Harvesting the fields always starts with me before they...Statistically, the ripest harvest field for the gospel falls in the demographic of kids. We need leaders who are to help kids see the gospel, love the gospel, grow in the gospel, and dedicate their lives to the gospel. Kids leaders might not be thought of as theologians by many people, but I believe we should be some of the most sound theologians in the church. Gospel transformation takes place when we spend time with Christ and let Him drive the gospel more deeply into our minds and hearts. Then, and only then, will the Holy Spirit produce the fruit of …

Names of God: Yahweh Uzzi

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches.
The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is.

Yahweh Uzzi
Yahweh is the Hebrew Name for God. It is "I AM". It is used over 6000 times in the Old Testament.  It was such a holy name that the Jews would not even say it.

Yahweh means I am. Uzzi means strength. The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him. (Psalm 28:7)

What it reminds me?  When I am weak, God is strong for me.  It is great to know that when life is hard and I feel helpless that I have a God who is strength.

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word.
40 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that her warfareis ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the Lord's hand
double for all her sins.
3 A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The Word of God Stands Forever6 A voice says, “Cry!”
And I said,[c] “What shall I cry?”
All flesh is grass,
and all its beauty[d] is like the flower of the field.
