Sermon Notes-"I Fought the Law" based on Matthew 5:17-20

Introduction: The title for today’s sermon comes from a song recorded in 1966 by Buddy Holly and the Crickets and then the Bobby Fuller Four.  It basically repeats this line over and over “I fought the law and the law won.” It was a song about rebellion.  In today’s passage we see Jesus explaining our relation to the law.  We typically respond to the law in one of two ways: work really hard to keep it (old brother in the parable) or rebel against it (younger brother) which leads to either pride or despair.  As older brothers, we think we are pulling it off and/or judge others who are not as spiritual as us OR as younger brothers, we acknowledge we can’t do it based on our past or repeated mistakes and just give up.  Jesus provides a third option that is great news. Complete (vs. 17-18) ·          Law (The Torah or first five books of the Bible) or the Prophets (Major & Minor) o    Basically a descriptio...

Sermon Notes-"Blessings Realized" from Matthew 5:4-8

Introduction: #Blessed - Spend any time on social media and you will see this hashtag appear. It appears 137 Million times on Instagram (wedding, babies, relationships, vacations, new jobs). He is not prescribing what you must do to enter it.” Skye Jethani pg. ...

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,      and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2  And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,      the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,      the Spirit of counsel and might,      the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord . 3  And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord . He shall not judge by what his eyes see,      or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4  but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,      and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,      and with the brea...
