What does it mean to be "in Christ"?

For 2017, the phrase I am focusing on is "in Christ."  Each week, I will post 1 verse that includes the phrase "in Christ". I look forward to growing in understanding of what it means to be "in Christ." 17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18  All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19  that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:17-19)

God is Creator

Because God is Creator In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God . (Genesis 5:1)   Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:28) Therefore, we are created in His image and new So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27) I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.  (Psalm 139:14) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation . The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

New Book Friday

Image
As you know, I love to read!  Therefore, much of my Christmas list includes new books.  So, every Friday I am going to share a new book that I received this year.  You will have to return to the blog in the future to see quotes and thoughts from each of these books.

Great is Thy Faithfulness

These words from Scripture keep coming to mind and in several things I have been reading lately.  Therefore, I wanted to share the beloved hymn by Shane and Shane with all of you today.  Be reminded that you are a "new creation", God's mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness!

New Year Prayer by Scotty Smith

The prayer below is from Everyday Prayers by Scotty Smith.  What a great reminder as we begin this new year! January 1   A Prayer about the New Year and the Gospel   Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Josh. 24:14–15)  Gracious Father, as I sit here sipping fresh coffee and watching flames dance in the fireplace, it’s early into the first day of a new year. Tons of confetti cover the streets of Manhattan, and gratitude fills my heart.  I’m thankful I’m beginning this year with a little better understanding of the gospel than I had last year and the previo...

I am gifted, new, forgiven, adopted, loved

These are the titles of several chapters from Who Do You Think You Are? by Mark Driscoll.  Here are some quotes for you to consider as you think about your identity: Rather than complaining, it's better to humbly start serving to meet a church's needs and invite others to also help.  In this, we have imputed righteousness and imparted righteousness. In the former, we are declared holy in the sight of God. In the latter, we are empowered to live holy lives by the Spirit of God after being born again to live a new life in Christ.  Sadly, we often forget this wonderful benefit of regeneration and instead try to change our outward behavior, forgetting that change begins deep inside us and works its way out into our daily actions.  Anger, when rightly harnessed and directed at true injustices (not our perceived injustices), can be a powerful force for justice, goodness, and love.  The only helpful answer to our bitterness and anger is the gospel.  In...
