The early church agreed that because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, He alone is all we need to be saved #thegospelprojectkids The people saw firsthand how Jesus ministered not only to the spiritual needs but also to their physical and material needs. Healing, teaching, and sustenance came from his hand, and all for their good.  @russramsey We read the New Testament & Old Testament through the lens of Jesus. It is a Christ centered hermeneutic. (Tim Geddert) @usmbchurches A church that is deeply aware of its misery & nakedness before a holy God will cling tenaciously to an all-sufficient Savior, while one that is self-confident & relatively unaware of its inherent sinfulness will reach for religion & morality whenever convenien...

Qutoes from books I am reading

Image
Here are some quotes from three books I am currently reading: "the role and nature of this person (Holy Spirit) is to "help". "Jesus presents the Holy Spirit to us as the ultimate answer to overcoming and undoing the work of Satan, the great Deceiver and "the father of lies" "This conviction is the only way people become aware that they need the Savior. The truth is that no one ever comes to believe in Jesus as Savior without first coming to the conviction that he or she needs the Savior. That's the Holy Spirit's job." "Good advice requires a person with a plan; Good News requires a person with a message." "Radical discipleship means bringing to the world--including Christians--the wonderful, surprising, and offensive news of the gospel." "If people are withering on the vine with perpetual exhortations without Good News, praise without being reminded what they are praising God for, calls to active im...

So the law reveals the righteousness that God is, by which we are judged (and therefore condemned); the gospel reveals the righteousness that God freely gives to sinners through faith in Jesus Christ. @MichaelHorton_ Informed minds, inflamed hearts, engaged hands... all 3 are products of faithful preaching of the gospel. Don’t settle for your favorite of the 3 @ScottyWardSmith   The Devil is the slanderer of God's children. Christians should not take his side. @mike_reeves Jesus appeared to Saul and changed him inside and out. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Here are some of my favorite tweets from the last few weeks.  This is one of the blessings of social media where we can hear the gospel from people all over the world. If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Love is not the fruit of our labors, but the fruit of the Spirit. Love is not about trying harder, but allowing God‘s love to flow to us & through us to others. @simplestapleton So the law reveals the righteousness that God is, by which we are judged (and therefore condemned); the gospel reveals the righteousness that God freely gives to sinners through faith in Jesus Christ. @MichaelHorton_ Just love God and people is not the gospel; it is precisely that holy demand of the law that we have grievously failed to keep.… Our love toward God and neighbor is the essence of the law; God’s love toward us in Jesus Christ is the essence of the gospel. @MichaelHorton_ Many people use the Bible merely as a manual of doctrine or a guidebook for living. But ...

We can never overestimate the unleashing of new-creation power that Jesus brought about when he took his seat at the right hand of God the Father & then celebrated his enthronement by lavishing the great gift, the Holy Spirit of God... (Dennis Johnson) When affection turns to annoyance, delight to drudgery, grace to a grudge, rest to restlessness, we have forgotten about Jesus and grace. # IrresistibleFaithBook @scottsauls Conformity to Christ’s image (sanctification) is the process of dying to self (mortification) and living to God (vivification) that results from being regularly immersed in the gospel’s story of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.  @MichaelHorton_ Reduce Christianity to good advice & it blends in perfectly with t...

Quotes from Books I Am Reading

Image
I am currently reading through two books: Christless Christianity by Michael Horton and Walking with Jesus through His Word by Dennis E. Johnson.  Here are some quotes I read recently: It is through God's Word of judgment (law) and salvation (gospel) that we are transferred from our own pointless scripts and inserted into the grand narrative that revolves around Jesus Christ. Reduce Christianity to good advice and it blends perfectly with the culture of life coaching...What distinguishes Christianity at its heart is not its moral code but its story...At its heart, this story is a gospel: the Good News that God has reconciled us to himself in Christ. The worst thing that can happen to the church is to confuse law and gospel...We naturally think that if you want people to do the right thing, you just need to tell them what to do and exhort them to do it with sufficient passion and effective methods. This, however, avoids both the law and the gospel...The law commands, but...

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-3, the Apostle Paul calls the historical death, burial and resurrection of Christ "the things of first importance." @MichaelHorton_ "Hear our loss of focus on the gospel in our songs. This isn't a comment about musical styles and tastes... In many cases, congregations unwittingly have begun to sing about themselves and how they are feeling rather than about God and His glory.” Sinclair Ferguson via @ScottyWardSmith Faith, which unites you to Christ, will spontaneously lead to love. Love works with Jesus for others. (Jack Miller) All our specialized Christian Wisdom, which courteously tips a hat to the gospel, ultimately ignores it & moves past it. It throws us back on our own strength & resources. Think de...

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. The longer the Psalmist in Psalm 130 looks at God’s great redemption, the stronger his faith grows. This is what makes it possible to give yourself over to God‘s priorities. Faith in Christ really does cleanse hearts and make them pure. (Jack Miller) Be a peacemaker in the light of God‘s love for you and in the power of the gospel. (Jack Miller)   For it is the Spirit who, everywhere diffused, sustains all things, causes them to grow, and quickens them in heaven and in earth. (Calvin’s Institutes)   Sanctification is the gracious and continuous operation of the Holy Spirit, by which He delivers the justified sinner from the pollution of sin, renews his whole nature in the image of God, and enables him to perform good works. @RevLouis Berkh...

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. You can never, ever assume the Gospel. Everything we do in Discipleship must be anchored in the Gospel – what Christ has done for us. @MichaelHorton_ interview on @theocast_org What the devil wants us to do is to lose sight of Christ’s part in the change process. Therefore, any change, any victory over sinful habits, has to start with you exercising more faith in your sovereign Senior Partner. (Jack Miller) The gospel, then, cannot be treated simply as a message for unbelievers, as the doorway into the Christian life; in order for Christians to grow they must be kept in the sunshine of the gospel. @timchestercouk @mike_reeves Our response to what God has done is a life characterized not by striving but by thanking, a life of gratitude—that’s what God...

If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Grace is an inward power that enables us to do what we would not ordinarily want to do. Paul emphasizes inward Grace to show us it’s not about just about what we do; it’s about who we are. If you get the “you” straight, then the doing will come straight too. (Jack Miller) The Father planned your redemption, the Son accomplished it and the Spirit is now applying it. It is finished. @pauldunk Someone will always have better coffee, better music, better facilities, better speaking, better marketing. Showcase Christ and his gospel. The false idol of super – Christians has destroyed the freedom of those who aren’t! @DrSteveWBrown Justification is still the doctrine upon which the church stands or falls. @MichaelHorton_ I am a Christian not because I think that I can walk in Jesus’s footsteps but because he is the only one who can carry me. I am not the gospel; Jesus Christ alone is the gospel. —Michael Horton via @birdchadlouis Love doesn’t come from us. We only love because God loved us first. We need to lift our eyes. @simplestapleton When we don’t have an assurance of God’s love, we don’t want to be in his presence because of our sin. Faith can’t flourish when you see God this way… Faith looks at least 10 times more at Christ then at your sin. (Jack Miller) God gives...
