Names of God: Elohim

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Elohim   Elohim means one true God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) What it reminds me?  God is worthy of worship for so many reasons but His creation will cause us to praise and worship.  As I look around at humans, animals, flowers, mountains, oceans, and more, I see an amazing work of God.  He made all things.  If He has the power to create everything, then I trust His power over my life.

Word for 2019: Holy Spirit

For the past several years, I have chosen a word for the year.  Some of those words have been: God's power, gospel, in Christ, and abide.  As I thought about 2019, the word that I am going to focus on will be Holy Spirit.  So, this is more than just a word, it is a person.  I look forward to growing in my understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and what He does from Genesis to Revelation.  Each week I will share a few verses that are connected to the person of the Holy Spirit. 13  For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13)   2  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:2)

Sermon Notes from God is....Creator

God is…….Creator Genesis 1 & Selected Verses Introduction: A.W. Tozer writes, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. And the second is what we think God thinks of us.” Intro: David Letterman, late night talk show host, popularized what he called a top 10 list.   Letterman, through humor, was able to create these lists as commentary on politics, Hollywood or current news headlines. This morning, I would like you to create a top 10 list about who God is.   List the ten most important things about Him. God is Creator in the Past (Genesis 1) ·          Vs. 1-God (Elohim) (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) created the heavens and earth. o    Elohim occurs by far the most often in the Bible (2,750×) [1] o    The Bible begins with a clear statement that God made everything. He is the subject of all the things created. o    When—“in the begin...

Sermon Teaser: New Series--God is....Creator

Image
This Sunday, I begin a new series on the attributes of God. Or in other words, the things that make God, God.  It is entitled, "God is...." Thank you to Brittni Rhodes for the graphics. This week, we will look at God is.....Creator Here are a few things to ponder prior to Sunday: Read the Bible passage : Genesis 1 Questions to think about: Who do you understand God to be?   Listen to this quote from A.W. Tozer, " “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. And the second is what we think God thinks of us.” Do you agree or disagree? Do you have any false narratives about who God is that is not based on the Bible? If so, during this series, consider letting them go.  Why does it matter that God is Creator? Charis by Preston Sprinkle

I shared briefly about the book, Charis by Preston Sprinkle in a previous post.  I have a few quotes I would like to share from Chapters 2-3: "God is the main subject of the entire Bible" "If Genesis 1 emphasizes the transcendence of God, then Genesis 2 highlights the intimacy of God. Transcendence and intimacy. We need both. Elohim simply refers to a deity and emphasizes his (or her) power. . . But Yahweh is God's personal name. . .God creates and God relates. Both are essential to God's character. We can't sacrifice either of these truths for the sake of the other." "When you look into the mirror and see scars and zits and fat and abuse and loneliness and pain, Yahweh sees glory and honor."  "God gives them (Adam and Eve) a billion things they can do and one thing they can't do." "Of all the ways that God could have saved us, He chose to work through the womb of women to raise up an image bearer who would crush th...
