Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. A gentle answer turns away wrath,      but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2  The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge,      but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. 3  The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,      keeping watch on the wicked and the good. 4  The soothing tongue is a tree of life,      but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. (Proverbs 15:1-4)

Labels define who we are rather than believing what God says about us. In contrast, all of us can also remember that person in our lives who shared encouraging words with us. As we begin this school year, I am praying for my children (and myself) to use words in a positive way.  This is easier said than done. When things are going well, I can easily share positive words with my children. However, when my children are hurtful to me or to others, the temptation is to let their behavior influence my words. Proverbs 18:21 is the basis for prayer for my kids this year. It says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”   As a dad, I want to encourage my family to speak life, not death. ...
