Sermon Notes-"Pick Me" based on Acts 6:1-15

Introduction: Today’s message is titled, “Pick Me”.   There are several examples of how we have experienced being picked in life.   My first memory of this would be on the playground picking teams for kickball.   A later example of this is when you applied for your first job.   You presented your qualifications and you hoped they would pick you over the other candidates.   A more recent phenomenon is in the area of reality shows or music competitions like American Idol or The Voice.   Contestants compete for the one spot and again are chosen based on abilities.   Our Scripture today looks at a different type of being picked today. Picked from Complaint- vs. 1-6 ·          The Problem-Vs. 1-As more and more people became disciples (followers of Jesus), it created a problem.   It was a great problem to have but it still needed to be addressed.   The Hellenists (Greek speaking Jews) complained that the...

Sermon-"Power Struggle"

Introduction: Where do we see “power” in our culture? (money, politics, status (get to the top no matter what), Control) How does that compare to power in the kingdom of God? (humility, dependance, less of me, abiding) Do we believe that power is available to us? If we do, would it change how we live? Power-Greek work “dunamis” where we get dynamite ·          19  and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might  20  that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, (Ephesians 1:19-20) ·          16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,… 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power...

Sermon Notes "Can We Build It?" Based on 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Introduction: As I titled this sermon, I immediately thought about a show that Mitchell used to watch as a kid.  So, we are going to watch the Bob the Builder Theme Song . It’s amazing to me how children’s TV theme songs can teach us something about the church.  Did you hear some of the lines-Can we build it?  Can we fix it?  It lists all of the characters and how they work together with their different abilities. Pursuit (vs. 1) (intentional flow from love to gifts to prophecy) ·          What does it mean to pursue something?  What comes to mind when you think of the word pursuit? A high speed chase by the police, a career, a dream, a person. o    Dictionary-to chase, to strive to gain or accomplish, follow, carry further or advance, engaged in vocation or hobby; Greek Word-carry out or participate in an activity; press forward; strive to ·          Pursue Love (a...

Sermon Notes-A Kid's Song and Timothy based on 1 Timothy 4:11-16

Here are my sermon notes from message today at Hesston MB: A Kid’s Song & Timothy 1 Timothy 4:11-16 Introduction : As I read the passage for the first time, I was reminded of a song that I sang when I was a kid at church.   You may be familiar with this song as well.   It is called “O Be Careful, Little Eyes” (handout). I’m going to sing the 1 st verse and then talk about a few additional lyrics. Just like this song, it seems like Paul is reminding Timothy about some important things related to the church and what Timothy needs to do. Review -Vs. 11 could refer to verses 12-16 or 6-10.   Most commentaries agree that the saying “command and teach these things” refers to what he has previously said but especially on Jesus as Savior. Example (vs. 12, 15) ·          Vs. 12-Why does Paul say “don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young” o    Because Timothy was young-most agree he is in...
