Introduction: One of the topics people least like to hear preached about is money. Similarly, one of the topics pastors least like to preach about is money.   Why is that? There are many reasons but I think part of it is we have made it about   a“have to” instead of “want to”. Today we will look at how Ezra 3 moves us from the “have to” to “want to” First, let me share a story I heard in a sermon by Erick Sorenson. A $100 bill, a $20 bill, and a $1 bill met up with each other at the shredder at the end of their natural lives. The $100 said, “Well, I’ve had a good life. I’ve seen the whole world. I’ve been on cruises in Caribbean, safaris in Africa, and vacations in Europe.” The $20 said, “Well, I’ve not done quite as well, but I have been to Atlantic City, Disneyland, and Starbucks.” They both turned to $1 bill and asked, “How about you?” He said, “Oh, I’ve seen the whole nation from coast to coast. I’ve been from church to church to church...”   The $100 bill...

Because God is our Redeemer , Thus says the Lord , your Redeemer who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord , who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens,   who spread out the earth by myself, (Isaiah 44:24)   For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.                                                       (Job 19:25)  In Christ, we are redeemed : “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people (Luke1:68)

In this chapter from Recovering Redemption, Matt Chandler shares how we live the Christian life knowing what He explained in earlier chapters of the book.  See previous posts on this blog.  And for believers, this means (1) renouncing what is old, (2) rerooting in what is new, and (3) perpetually asking God for help to keep this transformation happening. God's the one who knows you'll never be whole if the only solution He ever implements in your life is just pruning back the bad behavior. Renounce the roots, but not the Gardener. . .The problem is where we're seeking to plant them, where we're rooting them. But if we root these same desires in the kingdom of heaven--in the truths and promises of God--they will instead produce the fruit of the Spirit within us.
