What is the gospel?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have chosen the word, gospel, to think about and meditate on in 2016.  Gospel in the Greek literally means, "good news."  My best definition of gospel is the "life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ." I hope to have a deeper understanding of the word and definition at the end of 2016. Check out previous posts on this topic. 16  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” (Romans 10:16)   28  As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. (Romans 11:28)

Confident and Watchful

Image
I am continuing to read through The Pastor's Justification by Jared C. Wilson.  It has been a very helpful book and there is much in the book that applies to more than just pastors.  Here are some quotes from chapters on being confident and watchful: But we forget now that Jesus is for losers and for losers only. This is good news for you... So the law cannot empower obedience to itself. It stands over us, accusing. Only the gospel empowers its own implications. God uses sinners so that he will get the glory and so that he will get the glory in vivid, repeating imagery of turning ashes to beauty.  There is someone (Satan) who wants you and your church dead.  Very few things discourage a pastor more than anonymous criticism...The pastor should give no harbor to "about" talk that avoids "to" talk. We divide when we place our preferences above community with people who differ from us. We divide when we are more interested in what we want than what we c

Happy Birthday, Mackenzie!

Image
Today is my daughter, Mackenzie's 14th birthday. She is beautiful inside and out. We are thankful for how God has cared for her from the beginning even when she was born 5 weeks early.  Happy 14th Mackenzie! I enjoyed celebrating with you last night & will celebrate a little more tonight.

Names of God: Yahweh Shammah

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. This is a new feature on the blog on the names of God.  Why?  Because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Yahweh Shammah Yahweh is the Hebrew Name for God. It is "I AM". It is used over 6000 times in the Old Testament.  It was such a holy name that the Jews would not even say it.  Shammah means is there. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The Lord Is There.” (Ezekiel 48:35) What it reminds me?  No matter whether you are facing good times or bad times, joy or suffering, we have a God who is there.  He walks with us always.  He is not distant, but He is near.  What a comfort to remember God is there beside us each and every day.

Christ is Risen!

Happy Easter! Today we celebrate that Christ has risen from the dead.  There are many songs I love to sing around Easter.  Here is one that has combined a hymn with a contemporary addition.  Hallelujah, Jesus is alive! Christ the Lord is ris'n today, alleluia Sons of men and angels say, alleluia Raise your joys and triumphs high, alleluia Sing ye heavens and earth reply, alleluia Lives again our glorious King, alleluia Where O death is now thy sting, alleluia Dying once He all doth save, alleluia Where thy victory Oh grave, alleluia He is not dead, He is alive We have this hope, in Jesus Christ Love's redeeming work is done, alleluia Fought the fight the battle won, alleluia Death in vain forbids Him rise, alleluia Christ has opened paradise, alleluia Soar we now where Christ has led, alleluia Following our exalted Head, alleluia Made like Him, like Him we rise, alleluia Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, alleluia

Tweets and more tweets

This is a new feature on the blog.  Usually on Mondays, I get caught up on my favorite podcasts.  This usually results in a lot of tweeting on that day.  However, if you are at work and not checking Twitter during that time, you might miss some of the great truth being shared by others.  So, I am sharing some of best tweets from the previous week which include great wisdom and truth. When people are in pain or suffering, don't use cliches or moral platitudes or throw a book at their pain/suffering @Byronyawn  The church is not a house of law where we rent out one of the rooms to grace. @birdchadlouis The nicest person you’ve ever met and the most hateful person you’ve ever met have one big thing in common—they need God’s grace. @BrandonSmith85 The remedy for our deadness to God's grace is more grace. @RayOrtlund Christianity is not about what I can do to make myself worthy of His acceptance, but what God has done to make me worthy of His acceptance. @ZachMaldo

I finished the book, but would not recommend it

If you have been a regular follower of the blog, you know I have been struggling to finish a book on parenting.  I have tried to put into words why I have a love/hate relationship with the book.  I think my best explanation would be that I believe the author mixes the law and gospel.  It was very difficult for me because Farley gets the gospel right, but then the law is explained and it seems the line between law and gospel is blurred.  Other books on parenting have been full of law and no gospel.  Others explain the gospel in away I would disagree.  This book's explanation of the gospel I agree with, but struggle with the mixing of law/gospel in application. Here are a few quotes from the final chapters of the book: She rejoiced that Jesus had died in her place, that he had borne the Father's wrath in her stead...It moved the truth of God's love from her head to her heart. She saw and felt the Father's affection in a new way. Behind almost every child's weaknes

And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.

Column in Hesston Record

This past week, I wrote a guest post for our local paper, The Hesston Record.  It originally appeared in the March 9, 2016 edition.  This column will feature different pastors from area churches in the weeks ahead.  For those who do not receive The Hesston Record, I wanted to share my thoughts with you.  Have a great week! #HesstonStrong We are #HesstonStrong. This has become the rally cry for those affected by the recent shooting in Hesston at Excel Industries. We, as pastors, of the Hesston churches will be writing weekly reflections as to what this motto means to us.  Check back each week to see a response from pastors from other churches. Strong. What comes to mind? I know as a teenager I wanted to be strong which involved time and work in a weight room to build abs, biceps, quads, and shoulders.  As I grew up, strength became something that was portrayed in the workplace, home, and community showing others that despite circumstances, you would stand unshakeable.

Today's song is a new one that we learned in our church a few weeks ago. It was a song picked for our Daughters of the King Event on February 27th. I love the words of the verses.  It also connected well with the tragedy that occurred in our community just days prior to this event.  Your love is devoted like a ring of solid gold Like a vow that is tested like a covenant of old Your love is enduring through the winter rain And beyond the horizon with mercy for today Faithful You have been and faithful You will be You pledge Yourself to me and it's why I sing (chorus) Your praise will ever be on my lips, ever be on my lips Your praise will ever be on my lips, ever be on my lips You Father the orphan Your kindness makes us whole And You shoulder our weakness And Your strength becomes our own Now You're making me like You Clothing me in white Bringing beauty from ashes For You will have Your bride Free of all her guilt and rid of all her shame And known by her true name a

(Judges 6:24) What it reminds me?  When I am anxious and fearful, God offers peace. When life is spinning out of control, God is still on the throne and is all-powerful.  In our busyness and chaos, God can give us peace as we get our eyes up on Him and off our circumstances.

I've been running through rain That I thought would never end Trying to make it on faith In a struggle against the wind I've seen the dark and the broken places But I know in my soul No matter how bad it gets I'll be alright There's hope in front of me There's a light, I still see it There's a hand still holding me Even when I don't believe it I might be down but I'm not dead There's better days still up ahead Even after all I've seen There's hope in front of me There's a place at the end of the storm You finally find Where the hurt and the tears and the pain All fall behind You open up your eyes and up ahead There's a b
