Names of God: Rabbi

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. This is a new feature on the blog on the names of God.  Why?  Because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Rabbi Rabbi means teacher. 38   Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” (John 1:38) What it reminds me?  Jesus teaches us.  As a lifelong learner, I am excited to learn more about Jesus each and every day.  I love discovering how deep the gospel is.  I am thankful that Jesus reveals and teaches who He is. What a great God that wants His people to know Him.

Today's song is in honor of my kids.  I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago around graduation and I thought about all the parents with students graduating.  It's hard to believe that I have 3 teenagers and an almost nine year old.  Mitchell, Mackenzie, Megan, and Molly-I am your biggest fan and I have enjoyed watching you grow up, but you could "Slow Down" just a little bit.

What is the gospel?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have chosen the word, gospel, to think about and meditate on in 2016.  Gospel in the Greek literally means, "good news."  My best definition of gospel is the "life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ." I hope to have a deeper understanding of the word and definition at the end of 2016. Check out previous posts on this topic. 8  But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8-9)   11  For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. (Galatians 1:11)

You Are One

“ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)

Tweets and more tweets

This is a now a regular feature on the blog.  Usually on Mondays, I get caught up on my favorite podcasts and this usually results in a lot of tweeting on that day.  However, if you are at work and not checking Twitter during that time, you might miss some of the great truth being shared by others.  So, I am sharing some of best tweets from the previous week which include great wisdom and truth. Immanuel Immanuel means God with us. 23   “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,      and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:23) What it reminds me?  God is with me always.  This used to cause fear because I believed God knew all of sins and was wanting to punish me.  Now, it a great assurance because I know God is for me and cares about me because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross.  He is with me empowering me to love Him and others.  You are never alone!

Here is another great song reminding us of who we are in Christ.  You are not defined by your mistakes or exterior but by God.  Enjoy this new song by For King and Country. Mirror mirror, mirror on the wall Tellin' those lies, pointing out your flaws That isn't who you are That isn't who you are It might be hard to hear, but let me tell you dear If you could see what I can see, I know you would believe That isn't who you are There's more to who you are So when it's late, you're wide awake Too much to take Don't you dare forget that in the pain You can be brave, hear me say I see you dressed in white Every wrong made right I see a rose in bloom At the sight of you (oh so priceless) Irreplaceable, unmistakable, incomparable Darling, it's beautiful I see it all in you (oh so priceless) No matter what you've heard, this is what your worth More than all the money or the diamonds and pearls Oh this is who you are Yea this i

(2 Corinthians 11:7) 6  I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7  not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.   (Galatians 1:6-7)

In recent sermons, I have talked about the importance of our view of God.  A.W. Tozer writes, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." So, I was glad to find this song today that is playing on the radio by Love and the Outcome.  I hope you will discover the "God I Know" not some false or inaccurate view of God shaped by culture or the church. Happy Anniversary, Bethany!

Today, Bethany and I have been married for 18 years.  You can donate here to help Bethany and J.L. get to Hawaii for our 20th--it's only 2 years away! I am thankful for the woman I married and love her more everyday.  Over the years, we have had some great experiences together.  We also have had challenges which have helped us trust one another and God more. Marriage is a gift from God. Happy Anniversary, Bethany!

Sermon Notes: But ...... based on Nehemiah 9:16-32

Image
Introduction: My introduction last week focused on various views of God that people in the church and in our culture have.   We looked at who God is based on Nehemiah’s prayer.   God creates, God keeps his promises, God rescues, God provides.   Opening : How do you view yourself? How do you view humans? How do you view characters in the Bible? Abraham-lied, Noah-got drunk, David-committed adultery, killed someone, Peter-denied Jesus, Paul-killed Christians ·          As I mentioned last week, Nehemiah 9 is the longest recorded prayer in the Bible. The emphasis throughout the prayer is on what God has done. [1] ·          Pattern in this prayer but they (Israelites)….but you (God) They …but God was forgiving, gracious, compassionate, slow to anger abounding in love (vs. 16-17) ·          Vs. 16-arrogant & stiff necked & did not obey- o    “Stiff-necked” is a common biblical expression for stubbornness. The imagery is that of an animal that struggles ag

The only leverage I have over sin is to trust in the One who has overcome it. @RelevantChris Christianity is about Christ crucified for sinners. @ZackJamesCole If we see Jesus as just our example, we'll be crushed when we fail.
