Word for 2018-abide

Image
My word for 2018 is abide.  I have this great picture over my fireplace made by a good friend that reminds me to abide each day.  My understanding of abide is to "be with Jesus." What does it mean to abide?  Here are some definitions to help us better understand the word.  The Greek word "meno" which is a verb means "to stay". It can also be translated as abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry for. Here are the final verses from the Old Testament. Each week I will share a verse (or two) to help us better understand abiding. The Lord utters his voice      before his army, for his camp is exceedingly great;      he who executes his word is powerful. For the day of the Lord is great and very awesome;      who can endure it? (Joel 2:11) And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord ,      in the majesty...

Sermon Teaser-Community VBS Service

Image
This Sunday, we will not have regular Go Deeper Hour or worship at Hesston MB.  Instead, please join us at Hesston High School at 10:30 a.m. for a Community Worship Service to celebrate Vacation Bible School.  This is a great opportunity to worship with others from our community who attend other churches.  Also, it is a great way to support our kids who will be singing songs and reading Scripture from VBS week.  This service is all about the kids. Don't use this as an excuse to stay home, but join us at 10:30 a.m. For those who need extra assistance, there will be golf carts in the parking lot to help you get to the high school doors.

Names of God: Yahweh Shalom

We often forget.  We see throughout history the Israelites and the church forgetting. We need to be reminded often of who God is in Scripture, church history and in our lives and churches. The names of God are important because these names are not just what God does, it is who He is.  I hope this will encourage you as you are reminded of how good, great, and awesome our God is. Yahweh Shalom Yahweh is the Hebrew Name for God. It is "I AM". It is used over 6000 times in the Old Testament.  It was such a holy name that the Jews would not even say it.  Shalom means peace. 24  Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. (Judges 6:24) What it reminds me?  When I am anxious and fearful, God offers peace. When life is spinning out of control, God is still on the throne and is all-powerful.  In our busyness and chaos, God can give us peace as we get our eyes up on Him and off our circ...

Verse of the Week

My Aunt Kay Jean suggested I start sharing a verse of the day.  I liked her suggestion but decided instead of a verse of the day, I would share a verse of the week.  Be reminded of who God is from His Word. 35  Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36  When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37  Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” (Matthew 9:35-38)

Sermon Notes from "Faith Alone" based on Romans 3:21-26

Review : We are continuing a 5 week study on the 5 Solas. Sola is Latin for alone, the solas were considered the foundational principles of Protestantism which was begun by Martin Luther in 1517 (Sola! Pg 3) Scripture Alone -One Story, God-Breathed, Useful Grace Alone from God for us, a gift available to all people for all of life and motivation. Christ Alone- what Christ did (life, death, resurrection, appeared to many ascension), what we do- The crowd words from John 6:28-29 “Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” What is faith? Video from “What’s in the Bible” (1:55) §   trust (faith) n. — strong confidence in, and reliance upon, someone or something; often with the object of trust understood. §   Faith is not about how much faith we have or intensity of our faith, but what our faith is in which is Jesus Christ. ·    ...

Sermon Teaser-Faith Alone

This Sunday, I continue a 5 week series on the solas of the Reformation.  What is a sola?  It is the Latin word for alone.  This week, we will focus on Faith alone.  Here are a few things to ponder prior to Sunday: Read the Bible passage : Romans 3:21-26 Questions to think about: How would you define faith? Is there a difference between faith and faithfulness? If so, what? How have you misunderstood faith in the past?   If it's not faith alone, what do we look to instead?  Helpful Resources Why the Reformation Still Matters by Michael Reeves and Tim Chester Sola! Tweets and more tweets

Here are some of my favorite tweets from the last few weeks.  This is one of the blessings of social media where we can hear the gospel from people all over the world. If you like the tweet, go and follow the person on Twitter. Jesus cleanses us from both the penalty and the power of our sins - he is the double cure. He not only declares us holy, but he also empowers us to be holy. Union with Christ means Christ is in you. @WilbourneWisdom The gospel also reminds me that my righteous standing with God always holds firm regardless of my performance, because my standing is based solely on the work of Jesus and not mine.  @MiltonVincent #agospelprimer As Savior, Jesus seeks sinners. He paid the ultimate price—His own life—to save people from sin. #thegospelprojectkids We miss the message of the Bible when we read it as though we’re doing our algebra homework, so we can get a good grade from God for the day. @ElyseFitz Galatians 3:3. The gospel is for Christians too. @ja...
