The Soul of Jesus’ Questions and the Questions of our Soul

  • What is it about questions?
  • Why are we so quick to give answers but slow to ask questions?
  • How do we ask questions that are timeless and also timely?
  • What if following Jesus was not about having all the answers but instead about asking great questions?

What other questions have changed the trajectory of your life?

  • Great questions take us on a magnificent journey.
  • Socrates-The Curious Questioner A good question provokes (gadflies) and brings new life (midwifes) into the world. He died because he asked questions.

Questions-What Jesus utilizes in order to bring about transformation in people’s lives.
  • Physical Field Trips (walking around)
  • Imaginative Field Trips (storytelling)
  • Mental Field Trips (asking questions)

Jesus used questions brilliantly. Asking questions was central to the teaching of Jesus.

  • There are approximately 980 questions in the New Testament.
  • Jesus asked over 300 questions.
  • Jesus was asked over 180 questions. He only directly answered 5 of them.
  • Why did Jesus ask so many questions?
    • Answers provide information. Questions combine information, emotion, and persuasion.
    • Jesus asked questions for the transformation of others. Jesus uses questions like a scalpel in people’s lives.
    • What is the difference between a good and great question? A good question helps me get to know you. A great question helps me get to know me.
    • Jesus not only asks great questions but also important is where and when He asks the questions.
    • Questions help us unlearn so we can relearn.

Spiritual formation is the process of unlearning the wrong questions in order to learn to ask and live into the magnificent ones.

Why are we so hesitant to ask questions? Are we too prideful, impatient, busy, easily satisfied?

The type of questions we ask determine the type of story we live into.
Why is the happening vs Lord, why is this happening?
Where are you God?  vs God, where are you?

The quality and depth of our questions will directly or indirectly affect the quality and depth of our lives.
