Dr. James Beck at #usmbstudyconf "An Overview of the Issues"

Complementarian-Scripture requires some restrictions on ministry for women.
Egalitarian-Scripture does not require restrictions on ministry for women.

There are many settled issues in this debate.
Each church or denomination needs to start this conversation with teaching these settled issues.

Bottom line-1 Corinthians 11, 14
Complementarians affirm that these texts are restrictive and prescriptive.
Egalitarians affirm that these texts are descriptive and situational.

The presentation will be organized around 13 different questions.
  1. Does Genesis 1 teach hierarchy?
  2. Does Genesis 2 teach hierarchy?
  3. What impact stems from the Fall?
  4. Is it relevant that Deborah was the leader of the nation?
  5. How much significance should we attach to female prophets in OT and NT?
  6. Was Jesus an egalitarian?
  7. Did the early church deal with issues related to gender?
  8. What can we learn from the practice of Paul?
  9. What can we learn from 1 Corinthians 11, 14?
  10. Does 1 Timothy 2 prevent women from exercising authority over men?
  11. How can women be leaders if they must submit to men? (Ephesians 5:21-33)
  12. Why were all OT priests and the twelve all males?
  13. What is the meaning of Galatians 3:28?
Conclusion
  • Each side in this debate seeks to be faithful to the principles of Scripture.
  • Each side emphasizes the passages that speak most clearly in their favor.
  • Each side de-emphasizes (or even explains away) the passages that seem to favor the other side.
