Unlikely Heroes

Tonight, we watched "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" as a family movie. It was really good. It kept the interest of my 9 year old as well as my 2 year old. I highly recommend it to families to watch together.

The theme of the movie is being a hero. Three unlikely heroes are chosen and keep making excuses for why they cannot be heroes. "They are not good looking, strong, smart, etc." Without ruining the ending, they discover that being a hero is about "doing what is right," not any of the things mentioned above.

As Pastor Steve preached today, we need to look at this in light of God's Word. What does God say about being a hero? Here are a few Scriptures to get us thinking:

  • 1 Samuel 16:7 says, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." Take heart God is not concerned with the same qualities as the world does. God looks at your heart!
  • Matthew 20:26 says, "No so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant . . ." To be a hero we don't do whatever it takes to get to the top and hurt others in the process, but we must be willing to serve.
  • Acts 5:29 says, "We must obey God rather than men!" Obedience to God is required of a hero even when the rest of the world and culture is going against us. It does not matter who the majority is or what party decides it or whether your favorite author or movie star supports it, what matters is what God says in His Word.
  • Romans 15:13 says, "May the God of hope fill you will all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." As believers, we have the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit inside of us. He will empower us to be the heroes that we need to be. How does this happen? By trusting in God and being empowered by the Holy Spirit. We cannot rely on our own strengths, but instead let the Holy Spirit work through us. We will accomplish much more through Him than on our own.

I hope that all of us can be the heroes that God needs at this moment in history. Remember it is not about us, but it is all about Him. Pray for opportunities to be a hero for God!
