As many of you know, I am the Associate Pastor of Family Ministry at Hesston MB Church in Hesston, KS. One of my main ministry responsibilities is encouraging and equipping couples and parents. So, for the last 6 months, I have been reading several books on the subject. Let me offer a few recommendations:

For Dads:

The Dad in the Mirror by Patrick Morley
They Call Me Dad by Ken Canfield

For Parents:

Effective Parenting in a Defective World by Chip Ingram
Parenting is Heart Work (currently reading) by Turansky and Miller
DVD Curriculum: Visionary Parenting (currently reviewing) by Rob Rienow

One passage from the Bible continues to pop up in most of these books and studies. It is Deuteronomy 6:4-9. This passage was given to the Israelites. It is a guideline to us as parents. Our goal in parenting is not to have the most intelligent, most athletic, most musical, best behaved children, but instead that they love God and love others. I am excited about a conference called D6 that I will be attending in Dallas in September that speaks to this very issue. So, please read and think and pray about this passage today.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. a]">[a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
